GDPR

Dear All at All Saints Church Lydiard Millicent, Parish of NW Swindon and Lydiard Millicent

Most of you will have picked up that there is a change being made to the law on data protection. Lots of organisations may have been e mailing you about it. It is called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and it came into force on 25 May 2018 (last Friday). Its real purpose was to tackle the abuse of personal data that is rife in society but, unfortunately, it is a bureaucracy that applies to every organisation which holds personal data and that includes the Church. Tudor, David and Karen Johnson have been working on this to ensure that we comply with the regulation.

We will ensure that we treat any personal data we hold on you safely and lawfully. We will never share your personal data with anyone outside the church without your permission. We have written a privacy notice which is on the board at back of church but we will also need to contact everyone on the electoral roll to check that we have accurate details for you and to ask for your consent to use the information from the electoral roll to let you know about news, notices and events in the church. We must have consent because the electoral data is considered to be sensitive under the regulation.

If you have contact details for other church members which you use to do swaps on the rota or to organise rotas this perfectly OK to continue but you should be careful to ensure that you do not pass on the information to anyone outside the church without the person’s agreement. Finally, if you should happen to have a copy (paper or electronic) of the electoral roll that you have been using then you must destroy it. As soon as we are able to share contact details we will let you know.

There are a few people who need to have some simple GDPR training which we will arrange. If you think you have personal data that might be covered by the regulation or just have questions then please contact Karen Johnson, who has agreed to be our Data Protection Officer
