Caring for Creation

Caring for Creation

At All Saints, we believe that caring for God’s creation is an important part of our Christian faith. We are continually exploring new ways to reduce our carbon footprint, minimise our impact on the planet, and help nature thrive.

Supporting Biodiversity

In August 2024, we were delighted to receive the Bishop’s Award for Good Management for Wildlife, and we currently hold an Eco Church Bronze Award.

Our churchyard is an important space for people and wildlife alike, and we are working in a number of ways to support biodiversity:

  • Year-round flowers: We ensure that UK native flowers bloom throughout the seasons – spring, summer, autumn, and winter – providing food for insects all year round.
  • Wildflower beds: At the back of the church, we have wildflower beds planted with seeds, with help from our youth group.
  • Wilder areas: Some parts of the churchyard are left to grow naturally, creating shelter, food, and habitat for insects and small mammals.
  • Pond: Our church pond was installed in 2024 and provides a valuable resource for amphibians, insects, and birds.
  • Bee and bat hotels: These offer safe spaces for pollinators and nocturnal wildlife.
  • Youth and children’s activities: In summer, youth group meetings are sometimes held in the churchyard – complete with a paddling pool on very hot days – so that young people can enjoy the wildflowers and pond. We also welcome local pre-school children once a year to explore the churchyard and learn about biodiversity.

Energy Efficiency

As part of our Reordering in 2025 we installed two Herschel Halo Infrared Heaters in our south aisle. These not only beautifully complement our Grade 11* listed  building but reduce both our carbon and energy costs.

Looking ahead

We will continue to look for ways to care for creation, reduce our environmental impact, and support biodiversity. This includes exploring further energy-efficient technologies, expanding wildlife-friendly areas in the churchyard, and engaging our community—especially young people—in conservation activities. By nurturing both nature and faith, we hope All Saints can remain a welcoming and sustainable space for generations to come.
