Bells have been used throughout history to sound out warnings, happy occasions, calls to worship and much more. The current bells at All Saints have been heard across the village for at least 300 years and with a major overhaul just over 20 years ago they are in very good condition and some of the easiest bells to ring in this area.
Retirement and illness have depleted our current band and we are now setting up some taster sessions and beginner courses to help new ringers take part in this ancient and uniquely British tradition. Ringing for Sunday worship is a main focus but we also ring for weddings, funerals, life occasions, historic occasions, royal events such as births, weddings, coronations and much more. So, what does it take to become a good ringer?
Some myths – you don’t need to be strong, our current bells can be rung with the lightest of touches. You don’t need to read music or be particularly ‘musical’.
What you do need – a sense of humour, like making friends, have the ability to lift both arms above your head ‘elbows next to ears’ with reasonable coordination, the ability to count to six, enjoy learning a new skill, aged between11 and 99 years.
